Pumped Storage Hydropower Plants (PSHPs) are one of the most extended energy storage systems at worldwide level , with an installed power capacity of 153 GW . The goal of this type of storage system is basically increasing the amount of energy in the form of water reserve .
Indeed, if the turbine is in a base-loaded plant and the power output of the plant is adjusted to meet the demands of the available head, the plant would be able to operate year-round at a constant efficiency of 91%. Pumped storage plants would realize an additional payoff in efficiency if the variable-speed operation were adopted.
“The Marshalls Energy Company is a semi-autonomous utility company responsible for the generation, distribution and sale of electricity on a number of islands and atolls within the Republic of the Marshall Islands.”
In the MILP formulation, each operation mode of the pumped-storage units (generating, idle and pumping) is modeled as a pseudo-unit, as referred to by the authors. Transition costs among different operation modes as well as minimum on/off times for each mode are considered in the paper.
One characteristic of pumped storage plants is the need to stop and reverse rotation to commence pumping. To date, when transitioning from generating to pumping mode, an auxiliary pump motor starting or induction starting of the main synchronous machine is used to bring the system up to speed.
Case study The proposed MILP model is applied to a real system that is the Pumped Storage System of Argentine Republic. The system is formed by two PSHPs. First one is Los Reyunos Plant, which is located in Mendoza province. It has two units with a total installed power capacity of 225 MW and its yearly generation is about 247 GWh.
