The new facility in Spain will further support e-mobility and energy transition efforts in Europe and globally. Stellantis is pursuing a dual-chemistry battery approach, utilizing both lithium-ion nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) to meet diverse customer needs.
With an initial investment of approximately 285 million euros, a facility is planned in Sallent in Spain. The new production plant will be built at an existing ICL site on a former potash mining site. The proposed plant is designed to meet the growing demand for LFP cathode material in the European market.
In November 2023, Stellantis and CATL signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) to locally supply Lifepo4 battery cells and modules in Europe.
