Botswana has one of the highest levels of solar insolation in the world, but until recently, there were no reports of significant use of solar energy. However, as of September 2012, the first solar power generation plant in the country has been opened. The Botswana Renewable Energy Conference was held on 11–12 August 2014.
Botswana's energy sector is a growing industry with significant potential. Almost all of Botswana's electricity is generated from coal. There are no identified petroleum reserves, and all petroleum products are imported and refined, primarily from South Africa. Botswana also has an extensive supply of woody biomass, ranging from 3 to 10 tons per hectare.
Copper, gold, nickel, coal and soda ash production also has held significant, though smaller, roles in the economy. In 2022, mining accounted for about 16% of Botswana's real gross domestic product (GDP). Most of Botswana’s mineral industry consists of diamonds.
The country also imported nearly 1,1 million MWh to supplement its supply. In 2023, Botswana imported $156m in electricity, mainly from Zambia ($79m), Mozambique ($34,8m), South Africa ($31,9m), Namibia ($8,54M) and Zimbabwe ($1,54M), according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity.
Despite these advancements, Botswana faces several challenges in its energy transition. Climate change-induced water scarcity threatens hydropower potential, while grid disturbances, such as the countrywide blackout in 2023, underscore the need for a more resilient energy infrastructure.
