Under the 11th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand, Korea intends to continue ESS procurement through the Central Contract Market mechanism, totaling 2.1 GW on the mainland between 2026 and 2029, and 0.12 GW in Jeju between 2026 and 2028. In light of this plan, further rounds of ESS auctions are expected in the coming years.
The ESS market in Korea is designed as a centralized auction system the Korea Power Exchange (KPX) administers, where winning bidders enter into 15-year fixed-capacity contracts to supply standby grid support.
ESS units, which are large-scale facilities designed to store surplus electrical energy in secondary batteries for later use, are seeing a spike in demand due to the global shift towards renewable and carbon-neutral energy sources.
South Korea is also a major exporter of batteries and energy storage technologies, with Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution among significant suppliers of products from cells to complete BESS solutions internationally. According to the newest Basic Plan, the country aims to capture a 30% share of the global BESS market by 2036.
In Korea, ESS-related products are subject to stringent safety and quality certifications, including KCs certification and KCs certification for explosion-proof equipment.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said on May 22 it will open bidding for the installation of ESS facilities with a combined capacity of 540 megawatts. The project marks the first government-led ESS rollout beyond Jeju Island, where initial pilot efforts were previously concentrated.
