The Strategy is rooted in the twin objectives of decarbonising Bahrain’s economy while ensuring reliable and affordable access to the energy the Kingdom needs to sustain and, indeed, accelerate its growth. It is one of 6 priority sector strategies that stem from the Kingdom’s forward-looking Economic Recovery Plan.
In 2021, the Kingdom issued the “Electric Vehicles Technical Regulation”, to promote and adopt green transport in Bahrain. In 2023, the Ministry of Electricity and Water Affairs awarded a contract for the development of an electric vehicle (EV) strategy for the Kingdom.
Bahrain will have to produce 280 megawatts of electricity from renewables by 2025, increasing to 710 megawatts by 2035, to meet the country’s renewable energy targets.
Bahrain sees economic opportunity in its plan: Bahrain’s size, strategic location, favorable regulatory environment, and agile government, make it uniquely positioned to serve as a regional hub for the development and testing of innovative clean technologies.
As a result, Bahrain is looking to utilize the practice of “district cooling” to increase the efficiency of air conditioning by as much as 50 percent. Bahrain generates approximately 2.6 kg of solid waste per person per day.
