Virtually all Tunisian electricity (18 TWh) is produced by thermal power plants burning natural gas, the largest of which is in Sousse. Wind energy is the second largest source of electricity in the country; a capacity of 305 MW has been installed in a few years.
The project will consist of 660 km of 525-kV ACDC overhead lines in Tunisia, 661 km of 525-kV DC submarine cables, and 7 km of 525-kV DC and 400-kV underground cables, terminating at an existing high-voltage substation. Tunisia's power sector is well-developed, with 99.8% of its population having access to the national electric grid.
Tunisia’s national grid is connected to those of Algeria and Libya which together helped supply about 12% of Tunisia’s power consumption in the first half of 2023. Moreover, in August 2023, Tunisia’s sub-sea connection project with Italy, called ELMED, was approved for $337 million funding from the European Commission.
The highly anticipated Nawara gas field, which finally started production in early 2020, is expected to help reduce the overall energy deficit by 20% and gas imports by 30% once it reaches peak production. In addition to local gas production, Tunisia receives natural gas as a royalty on the Algerian Transmed gas pipeline crossing Tunisia to Italy.
The Trans-Mediterranean Pipeline, one of the gas pipelines that allow the export of Algerian gas to Italy, crosses Tunisian territory. It operates since 1983. In return for the crossing of its territory, Tunisia is entitled to 5.625% of the gas, in kind or in money, in accordance with a treaty of 1977.
