Energy storage technology is a crucial means of addressing the increasing demand for flexibility and renewable energy consumption capacity in power systems. This article evaluates the economic performance of China's energy storage technology in the present and near future by analyzing technical and economic data using the levelized cost method.
In this article, the investment cost of an energy storage system that can be put into commercial use is composed of the power component investment cost, energy storage media investment cost, EPC cost, and BOP cost. The cost of the investment is calculated by the following equation: (1) CAPEX = C P × Cap + C E × Cap × Dur + C EPC + C BOP
At this stage, the investment threshold for energy storage to involvement in China's peaking auxiliary services is 0.1068 USD/kWh. In comparison, the current average peak and off-peak power price difference in China is approximately 0.0728–0.0873 USD/kWh.
Therefore, direct investment in future energy storage technologies is the best choice when new technologies are already available. At this stage, the investment threshold for energy storage to involvement in China's peaking auxiliary services is 0.1068 USD/kWh.
