ATLANTA, March 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Power, a leading U.S. wholesale energy provider and subsidiary of Southern Company, today announced that battery-based energy storage projects at its Tranquillity and Garland solar facilities in California are now fully operational.
An additional 1,000 MW of new battery energy storage is expected to be procured in the coming years through competitive bidding processes and a 13 MW demonstration project is in development at Fort Stewart Army Installation near Savannah, Georgia.
"These co-located solar and storage projects are a first of their kind for Southern Power," said Southern Power President Bill Grantham. "We expect these new battery-based energy storage projects to enhance California's grid reliability.
The battery-based energy storage additions will enhance California's grid reliability by providing Southern California Edison and the California ISO with additional flexible resource capacity that will assist in further integrating intermittent renewable energy into the grid.
Because battery storage can provide stored energy to the grid for hours on demand, BESS resources enhance the overall reliability of the electric system.
“As we expand our diverse energy mix to include more renewable energy, which requires careful advance planning and flexibility to accommodate times when that source is not available, these batteries will be an invaluable part of the electric system.” Construction is currently underway at the following BESS locations:
