Credit: David Pimborough / Shutterstock. The government of the UK has launched a new investment support scheme aimed at bolstering the country’s energy storage infrastructure. The initiative aims to encourage the development of long-duration energy storage (LDES) facilities, which have not seen significant investment in nearly four decades.
Great Britain currently has 2.8GW of LDES capacity across four pumped storage hydro schemes in Scotland and Wales. Other technologies, such as liquid air energy storage, compressed air energy storage and flow batteries, could also benefit from the scheme.
“The flagship project in the Scottish Highlands can shift the dial on pumped hydro storage – harnessing the power of wind and water to become Britain’s biggest natural battery, storing excess renewable energy at times of low demand and supporting a future clean electricity system with instant power.
NESO, in its Future Energy Scenarios report, has advised the Government to add an indicative range of 2.7 to 7.7 gigawatts of stored power by 2035. This addition would at least double Great Britain’s current strategic reserve of 2.8 gigawatts spread across four pumped storage hydro schemes in Scotland and Wales.
Coire Glas received planning consent from the Scottish Government in 2020 and, with an electricity storage capacity of 30GWh, would double Britain’s total current electricity storage capacity – providing vital back up to an increasingly renewables-led system and bolstering energy security.
SSE Renewables hopes to make a final investment decision on the 1.3GW project pending successfully securing a cap and floor agreement in an appropriately designed scheme. Robert Bryce, Director of Hydro, SSE Renewables, said:
