According to the US Energy Information Administration, the average price of electricity to ultimate customers across all usage sectors in April 2016 was 9.81 cents/kWh (US Energy Information Administration, 2016).
Energy storage technologies offer a possible alternative to overcome some of these challenges by balancing the instantaneous mismatch in supply and demand in the electric grid effectively and thereby improving the system performance.
An understanding of the different elements of the power landscape, their dependencies and interdependencies, and how the different pieces fit together is the key to defining an effective energy storage strategy for smart grids (ABB, 2012, Modern Grid Strategy Team, 2009). 4.1.4.
